Hundreds in city attend satellite feed of funeral for Ana Márquez-Greene

Three hundred Winnipegers turned out to pay respects to six-year-old Ana Márquez-Greene at a live satellite feed of the little girl’s funeral service Saturday morning.

Ana Márquez-Greene is the former Winnipegger who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Newtown, Conn.,  Dec. 14. Twenty-six people, mostly young children, were shot to death in their classrooms.

The live satellite feed of Marquez-Greene’s funeral service at the First Cathedral in Bloomfield, Connecticut, was shown at Grant Memorial Baptist Church on 877 Wilkes Ave.

Over the past week, vigils for Ana have been held in Winnipeg at both the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg, and the Whyte Ridge Baptist Church, which the family attended when they lived here.

Ana’s father, Jimmy Greene, taught in the Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba for three years before moving his family back to his home state of Connecticut. The Hartford native is now a music professor and assistant jazz program coordinator at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Conn. While the family lived in Winnipeg, Ana’s mother Nelba Marquez-Greene worked at the University of Winnipeg.

Two funds for donations have been set up in Ana’s name at the places where her parents now work: The Ana Grace Márquez-Greene Music Scholarship Fund at Western Connecticut State University, and the Ana Grace Márquez-Greene Family Therapy Fund at the Klingberg Family Centers.

The family has also said donations can be made in Ana’s name to the Artists’ Collective in Hartford.
