Southern Manitoba walloped by snow

Swirling snow, blowing snow and drifting snow — good morning Manitoba!

Strap yourself in, there is more snow on the way. Another five centimetres of snow is expected to fall today in Winnipeg, with the wind become northwest and gusting to 60 km/h later this morning. The temperature will fall to -11 C this afternoon.

Reports say about 10 cm of snow has already fallen in the city, raising the winter total to 153 cm. That’s well above the average of 110 cm, and nearly double last year’s total of just 81 cm.

Around the province, there is blowing and swirling snow in traffic on all highways with some drifting but Highway 1 West from Headingley to Austin is experiencing reduced visibility at times.

All drivers should proceed with caution.

Environment Canada has issued blizzard warnings for the following communities: Portage la Prairie, Headingley, Brunkild, Carman, Morden, Winkler, Altona, Emerson, Morris, Steinbach, St. Adolphe, Dominion City, Vita and Richer.

Tonight, there will be periods of light snow and blowing snow with wind gusting northwest 40 km/h to 60 km/h. The wind is expected to diminish to 20 after midnight with a low of -18 C and a wind chill expected of -28.

On Tuesday, it will be sunny with a 30 km/h wind which will become light late in the evening. A high of -11 C with a wind chill of -28 is expected.

The sun and cold will continue on Wednesday with a high of -14 C and low of -20 C. It will be slightly warmer and sunny on Thursday as a high of -9 C is expected.
