WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Jets will try to retrench their season starting today with a return to the MTS Centre to play the Philadelphia Flyers (2 p.m., CBC, TSN1290).
The Jets are losers of five in a row and have fallen from the top rung in the NHL’s Southeast Division to second, though they are tied at 38 points with the surging Washington Capitals. Washington has two games in hand.
The worse news is that the Jets are also out of the top eight and a playoff spot, ranked 10th in the Eastern Conference heading into today’s game against the Flyers.
Philadelphia has 37 points.
Seven of Winnipeg’s final nine games are at home.
The Jets, who have lost seven of the last nine, just finished a stretch of five of the last six on the road and limped home this week without a lot of confidence.
“I think there was definitely more confidence when we were winning,” Jets centre Bryan Little said. “It’s definitely a lot more fun so the mood was better but we’re… trying to stay positive.
“We know we can’t get negative and start pointing fingers, that this guy’s at fault or this guy’s not producing.”
After today, the Jets will be off until Tuesday, when the Buffalo Sabres come to town for the second game of Winnipeg’s six-game homestand.
