BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Winnipeg Jets will likely have to make the playoffs without defenceman Zach Bogosian or centre Olli Jokinen.
Jets coach Claude Noel said today upon the team’s arrival in downtown Buffalo that neither player travelled today. Bogosian could not finish Saturday’s 5-4 shootout loss to the New York Islanders at the MTS Centre and the coach said there are “protocols” the team must follow with his injury.
That almost certainly means the head shot Bogosian took from Kyle Okposo has led to a concussion, or at least symptoms, and when that’s the case, a week might be the best-case scenario for his return.
Jokinen has a high-ankle sprain suffered early in Saturday’s game and is out six-to-eight weeks, Noel said.
The coach would not say who will take the spots left open by the injuries.
Defenceman Zach Redmond, who played today for the AHL’s St. John’s IceCaps, is one option. The team also has blueliners Derek Meech, Arturs Kulda and 19-year-old Jacob Trouba ready to play.
At forward, Antti Miettinen and injured forwards Nik Antropov, Jim Slater and Anthony Peluso are with the team this week. Noel indicated Peluso has been cleared to play. It’s unknown if Antropov or Slater could jump right in Monday night here against the Buffalo Sabres.
The Jets trail the Southeast Division-leading Washington Capitals (their opponents Tuesday) by three points. Each team has three games to play.
