After four years of haggling, the city is about to take title to the derelict St. Charles Hotel.
The matter will be up for debate at Monday’s meeting of council’s downtown development committee.
Committee chair Mike Pagtakhan says it’s a matter of public safety. The building’s owner, lawyer Ken Zaifman, has repeatedly failed to develop the building and has failed to install fire sprinklers mandated by the vacant and derelict building bylaw. Zaifman was convicted of bylaw infractions in 2011, and city staff inspected the building again last month and found it dilapidated.
“We’ve given him lots of opportunity,” said Pagtakhan.
Once the city takes title to the building, it’s likely CentreVenture will be enlisted to manage the sale and redevelopment process.
