There has been no bigger political story this year in Manitoba than the proposed increase in the Provincial Sales Tax. On Wednesday all sides weighed in with their positions for, against and somewhere in the middle.
The Winnipeg Free Press and the Community News Commons presented a special live debate on the PST hike featuring Infrastructure Minister Steve Ashton, Business Council of Manitoba CEO Jim Carr, Portage la Prairie Mayor Earl Porter and Progressive Conservative candidate Shannon Martin, former Manitoba head of Canadian Federation of Independent Business.
The panelists delved deep into the NDP government’s plans to increase the PST by one per cent to fund infrastructure. And the government’s decision to bypass a provincial referendum to approve the tax hike.
