Burke pleased with work by Bomber QBs and rookies

A little drizzle, a lot of wind and a lot of teaching.

That was the scene this morning at Day 2 of Blue Bombers rookie camp. The rookies are in town and will work out again this afternoon and Friday until the veterans reports Saturday for medicals. Sunday will mark the official opening of training camp.

“Still windy isn’t it? This is Manitoba. It blows like this all the way down to west Texas,” remarked head coach Tim Burke upon joining the media.

Weather conditions aside, Burke was happy with the work getting done by his quarterbacks and his rookies.

“We worked three different skeleton sessions so the quarterbacks all got a lot of repetition and were able to see the same plays and the same coverages,” said Burke.

Burke said all four quarterbacks, starter Buck Pierce and his backups Justin Goltz, Chase Clement and Max Hall, were given equal reps at the workout.

That will change on Sunday.

“Buck and Justin will get more of the reps but the other two will still get enough to try and prove themselves,” said Burke.

With the quarterbacks getting lots of work the same can be said for the receivers and defensive backs.

“We want our receivers to begin to understand the playbook and run good routes while at the same time our defensive backs can get our base coverage package down,” said Burke.

The Bombers return to the field at 4:15 p.m. today.
