A forest fire has forced people out of their homes in a northern Manitoba township.
Ilford, which is located 144 kilometres northeast of Thompson, was evacuated Saturday after officials determined a fire near the area was starting to become a threat.
According to a source who has family in the area, a large blaze is burning less than 15 kilometres away from the remote community.
The residents of Ilford were flown to Thompson.
According to the town website, Ilford has a population of 116 people.
The community originated as a construction and service centre during the building of the Hudson Bay Railway.
Later it served as a marshalling point for prospectors during the Island Lake gold rush, and then as a similar marshalling point for the network of winter freight roads going east from Ilford.
