Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive back Jonathan Hefney has been charged with possession of marijuana after a traffic stop in Rock Hill, S.C. on May 31.
The Rock Hill Herald, citing a police report, said the 28-year-old Hefney was pulled over at 1:20 a.m. after speeding. The officer smelled marijuana when Hefney rolled down his window and a search of his truck discovered 6.2 grams of marijuana. Hefney was issued a ticket for a first-offence possession and will have to appear in court on June 19 — the day before the Bombers are to complete their 2013 pres-eason with a game in Guelph, Ont, against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Bombers head coach Tim Burke, speaking on his weekly radio show on CJOB Monday night, said the club wasn’t aware of the charge until Monday. Hefney reported to Winnipeg for the opening of training camp on June 1.

“It’s sad that we even have to be talking about something like this,” said Burke. “To be quite honest with you, we didn’t find out about this ourselves as an organization until late this afternoon, so we’re gathering the facts on this. Until we find out the facts from the authorities in South Carolina I really don’t want to comment on it, other than to say it’s really disappointing if true. And if true we’ll have to address it.”
Hefney led the Bombers in tackles last season with 74 and over the winter signed a new contract with the club. Interestingly, on June 1 Hefney used his Twitter account to tweet: “After last night I’m blessed gotta make the most out of everything in front of me…. #BLESSED.”
