The Canadian Mennonite University is growing.
The small Christian school broke ground on a $13.9-million library and learning commons project, it was announced Monday. The expansion will take place at CMU’s Shaftesbury campus in southwest Winnipeg, with the facilities expected to serve as the new heart of the school.
“The range of activities being planned for this library and learning commons will make it the hub of the campus – linking the learning of the classroom with cutting edge research techniques that cross people and books and e-resources with invigorating forms of collaborative engagement,” CMU president Cheryl Pauls said in a statement.
“What is being done today really sets the tone for the future,” added Winnipeg South MP Rod Bruinooge, chair of the Federal government’s post-secondary education caucus.
CMU is also planning to build a new pedestrian bridge from the new facility to the existing campus over Grant Avenue.
According to CMU, approximately $10-millon has been raised through various fundraising efforts. Officials at the university hope the project can be completed before the fall semester starts in 2014.
