The airport at Lynn lake to stay open under a new public-private partnership deal between The Town of Lynn Lake and YYL Airport Incorporated.
In a statement today Lynn lake Mayor James Lindsay said the P3 agreement means YYL Airport Inc. , a local company, will assume all operational responsibilities of the facility and make capital investments to ensure its sustainability while the Town of Lynn Lake retains ownership.
“With this agreement, Lynn Lake will be in an improved position to help foster economic development locally and within the region, as well as beyond our location at the ‘End of the Road’, Lindsay said. “We have always felt that our geographic location is strategic to the development of northwest Manitoba and we are able to provide a vital air link to our neighbours in Nunavut.”
The town has operated the airport since 1999 after taking it over from the federal government, but in recent years at a deficit.
Lindsay also said the agreement ensures the availability of the airfield for Emergency Medical Services, Manitoba Justice, the mining industry, tourism and the Frontier School Division.
It also the return of aviation fueling capabilities back to CYYL.
The agreement has been approved by the town’s council and was formally signed Friday.
“On behalf of the 674 residents and business owners, the Town of Lynn Lake would like to thank YYL Airport Inc. for stepping up with their vision to make this facility an engine for economic recovery,” Lindsay said.
In a statement, Audie Dulewich, president of YYL Airport Inc., expressed that he and his partners, are keen to again make Lynn Lake Airport a vital part of northwest Manitoba.
