GUELPH — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers trail the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 17-13 after three quarters here at Alumni Stadium Saturday evening.

Trailing 13-12 at halftime, the Ticats got two singles and a 24-yard Luca Congi field goal in the third quarter to take a 4-point lead heading into the final frame.

Bombers tailback Chad Simpson got his team on the board at 1:21 of the 2nd quarter, romping 75 yards and virtually untouched for a Winnipeg TD. The Bombers missed the ensuing convert attempt when holder Mike Renaud fumbled the hold.

The Bombers also got a TD with 2:35 remaining in the half when backup QB Justin Goltz ran untouched into the Ticats endzone for a 7-yard score. Goltz’s TD was set up one play earlier by a 30-yard Buck Pierce pass to receiver Jade Etienne.

The Bombers trailed 8-0 coming into the second quarter. The Tiger-Cats struck quickly in this one as Hamilton receiver Sam Giguere beat Bombers cornerback Jovon Johnson to haul in a 61-yard TD pass from QB Henry Burris just 2:13 into the game.

GUELPH, Ont. — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers can take over sole possession of first place in the CFL’s East Division with a victory here at Alumni Stadium tonight over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Bombers would improve to 2-1 with a win over the struggling Ticats and that would be one win better than their East Division rivals Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts, who both fell to 1-2 with losses earlier in Week 3. A loss to Winnipeg tonight would drop the Ticats to 0-3.

The Bombers have not had sole possession of first place in the East Division since late in the 2011 regular season.

But history suggests a win tonight will not come easy — Winnipeg has not had victories in back-to-back games since August 2011. The Bombers come into tonight off a 19-11 victory in Montreal last week.

The oddsmakers also don’t like Winnipeg’s chances tonight. The website bet365 has Hamilton as 5.5-point favorites to beat the Bombers Saturday night.

Winnipeg’s scratches tonight are receiver Doug Pierce, offensive lineman Chris Kowalczuk, returner Aaron Woods and defensive lineman Ryan Lucas.

Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT. The game is being broadcast live on TSN and radio station CJOB.
