Congébec expanding warehouse

Congébec Logistics Inc. is undertaking a $6-million expansion of its Winnipeg warehouse to handle an increase in frozen pork shipments by local hog producer HyLife Foods.

“This agreement reflects a true partnership for growth with our customers and will allow HyLife Foods to increase its pork production,” Congébec president Laurier Pedneault said in a written statement.

Pedneault said that with the expansion of the frozen storage area in its 312,000-square-foot warehouse, HyLife will be able to process 6,200 pigs per day by September.

“Our refrigeration system will have the capacity to freeze eight additional containers of fresh pork every day, representing 400,000 pounds of meat,” he said. “In total, our Winnipeg facilities will ship 15 containers of pork daily around the globe.”

The expansion comes five months after Congébec acquired the Winnipeg warehouse/distribution centre and three other temperature-controlled warehouses from Winnipeg-based Westco MultiTemp Distribution Centres Inc. for $52 million.

The acquisition made Quebec-city based Congébec the second largest temperature-controlled warehousing and distribution company in Canada.

HyLife Foods, which is headquartered in LaBroquerie, operates a hog processing plant in Neepawa.
