Kichton scores twice in Jets prospects’ 5-3 win

PENTICTON, B.C. — Scott Kosmachuk’s third-period goal was the difference as the Winnipeg Jets edged the San Jose Sharks 5-3 in tonight’s Vancouver Canucks Young Stars Classic game at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Kosmachuk, a 2012 draft pick by the Jets, converted a well-executed two-on-one with teammate Austen Brassard at 3:55 of the third.

Kosmachuk had just escaped the penalty box after serving a boarding call, setting up the two-on-one.

Defenceman Brenden Kichton’s second goal of the game later in the third provided the Jets some insurance. Kichton was a seventh-round pick in last June’s draft.

It was the Jets’ first of three games at the tournament. They meet the Edmonton Oilers here Saturday night (9:30 p.m. CT).

Mitch Theoret and Josh Morrissey had Winnipeg’s other goals, helping make a winner out of goalie Jussi Olkinuora. The Jets lead three different times before they pulled away in the third.

San Jose has lost both games it has played so far at the tournament.

Rylan Schwartz’s second goal of the game was the only goal of the second period and lifted the San Jose Sharks into a 3-3 deadlock with the Winnipeg Jets through 40 minutes of tonight’s Vancouver Canucks Young Stars Classic game at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

The Jets have taken three one-goal leads in the contest.

Tryout Mitch Theoret, 2013 first-round draft pick Josh Morriseey and Brenden Kichton have the goals for Winnipeg.

Konrad Abeltshauser has the other goal for the Sharks, who lost their tournament opener on Thursday, 3-2 to Vancouver.

The Jets have a 22-21 edge in shots on goal.

Brenden Kitchon and Mitch Theoret each had a goal and an assist and the Winnipeg Jets have a 3-2 lead over the San Jose Sharks after one period of tonight’s Vancouver Canucks Young Stars Classic tournament game at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Kitchon teamed with Ivan Telegin for the Jets’ third goal late in the period. Winnipeg took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 earlier.

Theoret, a teammate of Mark Scheifele’s last season in Barrie, Ont., is with the Jets on a tryout and scored five minutes into the game, finishing a series of slick passes until Theoret had a wide-open net in front of the crease.

But the lead lasted less than a minute. Sharks defenceman Konrad Abeltshauser fired a screen shot from the point during a power play that beat Jets goalie Jussi Olkinuora.

First-round draft pick Josh Morrissey, picked 13th in this year’s draft, gave Winnipeg another lead on a power play later in the period but the Jets gave that lead away when defenceman Jan Kostalek overskated the puck near his own net, leaving Rylan Schwartz of the Sharks to beat Olkinuora.

The Jets outshot the Sharks 16-8 in the first.
