This city’s and province’s passionate love affair with all things Winnipeg Jets is officially about to heat up again.
The Jets’ 2013-14 training camp opens Wednesday with medicals and physicals before approximately 57 players take to the ice Thursday morning for the first time.
A number of veteran players were on the ice Tuesday at MTS Iceplex for one last informal skate before the opening of camp.
“It was too long of a summer, but it was good,” said defenceman Zach Bogosian. “I’m looking forward to getting things going.”
Of the Jets returnees, all but Grant Clitsome and Toby Enstrom skated Tuesday – including defenceman Dustin Byfuglien, who looked leaner after his summer, as well as still-unsigned unrestricted free agent Ian White of Steinbach.
Also working out were new faces Matt Halischuk, Devon Setoguchi, Michael Frolik and Adam Pardy, all of whom have NHL experience while first-round draft picks Mark Scheifele and Jacob Trouba were spotted after practice and following their return home from the Young Stars Tournament in Penticton. “I think it was a great summer for the Jets and Chevy (GM Kevin Cheveldayoff) did a great job,” said goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. “Setoguchi is going to score some goals and is a very good player. Same thing with Frolik. We signed some big guys. Now it’s time to make the playoffs.”
