It’s hard to believe, but beloved Winnipeg entertainer Al Simmons will be doing his first family theatre show in 20 years at the West End Cultural Centre on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Simmons hasn’t exactly been out of the public eye. He’s been a staple on the festival circuit and, in 2011, he performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. But this is the first time in a long time that Winnipeg audiences will be treated to the local icon’s ever-evolving solo theatre show, which has taken him on the road for over four decades.
“There is nothing better than seeing a child sitting on an adult’s lap and hearing them both laughing at an adult onstage who is acting like a child,” Simmons is quoted as saying in a release.
“I don’t ignore anyone. If there are adults in attendance, they can expect to laugh along with their three-year-old companions. I’ll be doing some “historicAL” (pun intended) material from way back in my 44-year career plus, as usual, there will be lots of surprises.”
Show is at 1 p.m. Tickets are $12 for children, $17 for adults and $40 for a family of four while supplies last, available at the West End Cultural Centre and Ticketmaster.ca.
Al Simmons’ career isn’t the only one that will be celebrated at the WECC on Nov. 9. Singer/songwriter Nathan Rogers is bringing his acclaimed Nathan Rogers Sings Stan Rogers show back to Winnipeg after a successful set on the Winnipeg Folk Festival mainstage.
Stan Rogers made a profound mark on the Canadian folk scene despite a career cut short by his tragic death at the age of 33. His legacy lives on through Nathan, who pays tribute to his late father with loving renditions of his best works, including The Mary Ellen Carter.
“I think the best part is the enthusiasm that Winnipeggers bring to these shows,” Nathan is quoted as saying. “It’s a room full of happy, smiling people. They sing, they laugh, they clap their hands, and they cry just the right amount at just the right time. This has never been a funeral parade but a fond remembrance among friends.”
The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $22 in advance and $27 at the door and are available now at the WECC, the Folk Festival Music Store, Music Trader and Ticketmaster.ca.
