Bombers starting Hall at QB against Esks

The rickety carousel of Blue Bombers quarterbacks made another rotation today, as head coach Tim Burke confirmed that Max Hall would get the start against the visiting Edmonton Eskimos on Friday.

The news is not exactly shot through with great anticipation, especially in a season where the quarterback question has been asked most days of every week. “I hate this merry-go-round,” Burke said. “We just can’t develop a lot of consistency.”

Still, Hall was the better of the two main pivots against Edmonton last weekend, completing 15 of 22 for 160 yards and a pick after he took over from Justin Goltz at the half. “Basically, Justin’s really good with his feet, but Max did a better job with decision-making during the game,” Burke said. “He’s showed why he was the starter at that point (before his injury).”

Hall will get the start behind a slightly remade offensive line. Today the Bombers announced they’d released Colt Schulte, who they picked up to take a look, and signed import tackles Dan Knapp and Jarvis Jones, as they look to find an answer for an injury-ravaged and porous offensive line.

Knapp, who stands 6-foot-5, played four pre-season games with the Oakland Raiders last year before signing on with the Cincinnati Bengals for the rest of the season, though he didn’t figure into a game. The 6-foot-7 Jones finished his NCAA career with the University of Oklahoma last year.

At least one of the new tackles is likely to play on Friday, Burke said.

The Bombers were a banged-up squad today, with a laundry list of players out and hurting. Despite Burke’s expectations, running back Chad Simpson won’t play this week, as he still wrestles with pain in an injured foot, and receiver Cory Watson is out too with a hamstring injury.

Cauchy Muamba is questionable for the game with a banged-up ankle, and Jovon Johnson may replace him at safety if he can’t play – they’ll know that situation on Wednesday, Burke said.

Terrence Edwards didn’t practice today with a maintenance day, but will be back on Wednesday, Burke said.
