It’s not how a prospect ever wants to start a training camp, watching from the press box with an only slightly battered body while his peers whirl around the ice, but that part’s over now for Adam Lowry.

It’s not how a prospect ever wants to start a training camp, watching from the press box with an only slightly battered body while his peers whirl around the ice, but that part’s over now for Adam Lowry.

On Sunday morning, the 6-5 centre ran through drills at the MTS Centre, another chance to fine-tune his form before he heads to Edmonton to play against the Oilers on Monday night. It will be the first game Lowry has figured into this pre-season, having tweaked his neck when he crashed hard into the boards in the first scrimmage of camp.

It wasn’t a serious injury, but he walked off the ice immediately, and the Jets medical staff decided to hold him back from contact until they were sure he was all fine. “It was tough,” Lowry said of the long wait to get in a game. “I was a little anxious to get back. But it was good to be cautious, and I’m feeling 100 per cent now.”

While Lowry was out, he skated a bit with fellow wounded soldier Chris Thorburn, and maybe that helped settle a 20-year-old eager to show his stuff. “He was really good about it, just to see how hard he was working to stay in shape,” Lowry said. “He just said don’t worry about it too much, don’t get too anxious, and don’t get out there before you’re ready. You’re young, you still have a full career ahead of you, so don’t push it.”

Well, Lowry — who signed a pro contract with the Jets after finishing his junior career last year — is good to go now, he’s got the all clear. He’ll figure in to Monday night’s game in Edmonton — the rest of the roster has yet to be revealed — and he’s ready to play with the best. “The pace has picked up, the NHL players are getting back into their form,” he said. “I expect the game tomorrow night to be even higher pace.”
