A report on the potential cost over-runs on the new police headquarters building on Graham Avenue will be released – but just not yet.
Mayor Sam Katz said this morning he and members of his executive policy committee will be briefed privately today on the status of the Graham Avenue building.
Katz said a seminar on the building’s status will be scheduled for all of council at a later date.
The new police headquarters – the former Canada Post building – had an original budget of $140.5 million for purchase and renovations but that climbed to $168 million in 2010 and to $194 million in 2011, a figure that was supposed to be guaranteed.
Finance chair Russ Wyatt said last week that while the project is on budget now, potential additional cost over-runs on the building could be in the $10 million – $17- million range.
Wyatt said the additional charges are the result of changes demanded by the Winnipeg Police Service, adding the WPS should find the extra funds out of its existing budgets if it wants the work done.
But Katz said this morning comments by Wyatt and other councillors are just speculation, adding the update from staff will provide concrete information.
It was assumed that the issue would be on this morning’s EPC agenda but it wasn’t and Coun. Paula Havixbeck – not a member of EPC – was not allowed to appear as a delegation and ask questions about the project and why the update wasn’t being discussed in a public forum.
