It’s a formality, but Winnipeg’s civic administration is asking council for the additional $17.2 million needed to cover the cost over-runs at the police-headquarters project.
The request formalizes what Mayor Sam Katz and other councillors described how the cost over-runs would be financed: borrow a further $15.2 million; and scrimp and save for the other $2 million.
A special meeting of the downtown development committee is set for Friday to accept the administrative request, which will then be forwarded to executive policy committee and then to council next month.
A report states the cost of the additional $15.2 million in borrowing will be $1 million annually out of the city’s operating budget – an amount equal to the city’s homeless and housing budget.
