After decades of staying dry, Winkler cracked open a liquor store this morning.

The Winkler Liquor Mart – a 5,800-square-foot full-service store at 155 Cargill Road – is finally ready after months of debate in the largely Mennonite city. It’s the first-ever liquor store in the growing community of approximately 11,000 people, located in a southern Manitoba area defined by its deeply religious roots.

Prior to today’s opening, Winkler residents had to drive 10 kilometres to nearby Morden to purchase booze from a full-service liquor retailer. The introduction of Winkler’s new Liquor Mart comes 10 years after the town allowed lounges and private clubs to serve alcohol.

According to the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, the new store will have approximately 1,800 listings of wine, spirits and beer.
