Josh Morrissey and Nic Petan have survived the grueling first test. And now it really gets hard.

The two Winnipeg Jets’ draft picks – both selected in the 2013 NHL Draft – are among the 25 players Hockey Canada announced today who will attend the National Junior Team selection camp, beginning Dec. 12th in Etobicoke, Ont. The 2014 World Junior Championships open in Malmo, Sweden later this month and the final roster, which will include 22 players (two goalies, eight defencemen and 15 forwards) and must be finalized by Dec. 25.

Morrissey, a defenceman selected 13th overall, is the captain of the Prince Albert Raiders and leads all Western Hockey League defencemen in goals this season with 13 and has added 19 assists in 26 games.

Petan, a second-round pick of the Jets, scored four goals in the Portland Winterhawks win over the Saskatoon Blades on Sunday and is second in the WHL in scoring with 19 goals and 41 assists in 28 games.

“Hockey Canada is looking forward to an extremely competitive camp in December, as we look to assemble a team that will make all Canadians proud,” said Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada’s senior director of men’s national teams and hockey operations in a press release Monday. “This is a first step towards naming our roster for the IIHF World Junior Championship. We look forward to the camp getting underway.”

“I would like to congratulate the 25 players that received an invitation today,” said Ryan Jankowski, head scout for Canada’s National Junior Team. “Canada is fortunate to have great depth of talent, and these players should be proud of this special opportunity. I would also like to thank the general managers and coaches of the Canadian Hockey League for their great support throughout this process.”

Not included on the list, to the surprise of many, were two Manitobans: centre Brendan Leipsic of Portland (Winnipeg) and Brandon Wheat defenceman Ryan Pulock (Grandview).
