It’s one of the oldest axioms In hockey and, in particular, the NHL: A team must have a quality, big-league goaltender and a swack of puck-stopping prospects in the system.

The Winnipeg Jets took an important step in solidifying that by drafting Eric Comrie last June and by signing him to his first big-league contract on Christmas Eve. Comrie inked a three-year, two-way, entry-level contract with an average annual value of $925,000.

Comrie, 18, has played in 30 games with the Tri-City Americans of the WHL so far this season, posting a 14-13-3 record, 2.52 goals against average and 0.923 save percentage.

Originally drafted by the Jets in the second round, 59th overall, in the 2013 NHL draft, Comrie boosts an amateur-level goaltender prospect pool that includes U.S. collegians Connor Hellebucyk and Jason Kasdorf.
