Hot off of a sturdy showing at the Canadian Olympic curling trials last month, Winnipeg skip Chelsea Carey will enter as top seed at the provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts next week.
Today, Curl Manitoba announced the seeding and draw for the annual women’s curling championship, which kicks off in Virden on Jan. 8. The top five seeds are rounded out by veteran skip Barb Spencer at No. 2, third-seed Michelle Montford, fourth-ranked Darcy Robertson and fifth-seed Kerri Einarson.
For the 29-year-old Carey, a two-time provincial Scotties finalist, it is a chance to continue working in the spotlight set at the recent Roar of the Rings, where the skip and her team made it to a tiebreaker round.
The 16 teams are divided into two round-robin groups of eight. The top two teams in each group will move into the playoffs, with the winners of each group playing each other for a bye to the final, and the second-place teams in each group playing each other to move on to the semifinal.
The provincial champion will represent Mantioba at the 2014 national Scotties in Montreal, which kicks off on Feb. 1.
