Scotties’ top seed falls after fourth game

VIRDEN, Man. — Top seed Chelsea Carey suffered her first loss of the 2014 provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts tonight, falling 10-3 to East St. Paul’s Kim Link in her fourth game of the women’s curling championship.

Link opened the game by scoring a deuce, then added another two points in the fourth end and triples in the sixth and eighth ends to seal the win. After the game, Team Carey lead Lindsay Titheridge praised veteran Link, who at 2-2 must win out to keep any realistic chance at a playoff spot alive.

“We would have liked to play a little bit better, but there’s three games left, and we got to come out and play our best,” Titheridge said. “I don’t think we were throwing them that bad, but just disastrous results. Kim’s team played unreal, they didn’t give us any chances… we knew coming into this game that nothing’s a give-me.”

The upset loss dropped Carey to 3-1 on the week, with three games left in the round robin. Still undefeated in their round robin group are Kerri Einarson and Darcy Robertson, who won their evening games to rise to 4-0 through the first two days of play.

Einarson’s win came courtesy an 8-0 blowout of Team Deb McCreanor in just five ends, while Robertson curled 7-4 past Flin Flon’s winless Team Patricia Evans. Also in the evening draw, Quinn Sneisen orchestrated her first win of the Scotties, beating Balmoral’s Kate Cameron 8-2. That puts Sneisen at 1-3 on the week, while Cameron sits 2-2.
