Strap on the blades, the second leg of the Red River Mutual River Trail on the Red and Assiniboine rivers has opened, extending the trail to Churchill Park on the Red River making the total distance 5.5 kilometres.
The trail already goes from The Forks west down the Assiniboine to the Osborne Bridge (a distance of 1.5 km) and south down the Red to the Norwood Bridge.
“We’re thrilled to be extending the Red River Mutual Trail down the Red into Riverview,” stated Paul Jordan, The Forks’ the chief operating officer. “It’s great to be able to connect our communities and neighbourhoods in a way that isn’t possible throughout the other seasons, that’s part of what makes it so unique.”
Further legs of the trail will open in the coming weeks as conditions permit.
The trail is groomed daily and conditions can be found at theforks.com/rivertrail or by following @RRMTrail on Twitter.
Skate rentals are available adjacent to the skate changing area. Rates are $3 for children and seniors and $5 for adults. Skate trainers are also available for $2.
In 2008, The Red River Mutual Trail broke the Guinness World record for the longest naturally frozen skating trail in the world, with 8.54 km. In addition to the skating trail, there is a walking trail and a cross country ski trail alongside the skating trails.
