The Blue Bombers have finally confirmed Gary Etcheverry as their new defensive coordinator.
Although news the Bombers were poised to sign the veteran coach first surfaced in late January, the team made it official Wednesday. The team also hired Nelson Martin as defensive backs coach, and Mike Scheper as the defensive line coach.
Etcheverry has over three decades of coaching experience, including ten seasons in the CFL, where he most recently served as defensive coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders through the 2010 season. After that, he took an ill-fated post with the CIS Ottawa Gee-Gees in 2012, but was canned five games into the season. He also did a stint as the head coach and VP of football operations for the Toronto Argonauts in 2002.
New defensive backs coach Martin, meanwhile, spent seven seasons playing for the B.C. Lions, including five as starting safety. After retiring from the field, he joined the Ottawa Renegades as a special teams coach in 2003, and later moved on to gigs as defensive backs coach in Saskatchewan and Hamilton, where he coached in 2012.
Finally, new defensive line coach Scheper comes to the Bombers after two seasons coaching the defensive line at Portland State University. Prior to that, he spent two seasons coaching the d-line in Saskatchewan.
