Some of the best female prep school hockey players across Canada are expected to lace ’em up in Winnipeg next month.
In 17 days, St. Mary’s Academy will serve as the host school for Hockey Canada’s 2nd annual Female World Sport School Challenge. The four-day tournament, which runs from Mar. 13-16, takes place at the MTS Iceplex.
Two other Winnipeg schools (Balmoral Hall and Shaftesbury Hockey Academy) will join St. Mary’s Academy in the eight-team event. Rounding out the field will be the Banff Hockey Academy, the Edge School for Athletes (Calgary), St. Francis Xavier High School (Edmonton), Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy (Kelowna) and Rothesay Netherwood School (New Brunswick).
Individual game tickets are $5 and are available at the door. Weekend passes are $25.
The event will also feature a meet and greet with newly minted Olympic gold medalist Jill Officer (second on the Jennifer Jones women’s curling team). That goes Friday, Mar. 14 at the tournament site (6:30 p.m. start).
Winnipeg Jets head coach Paul Maurice will also be the keynote speaker at a banquet the following night at the Victoria Inn. Tickets for the banquet are available via the St. Mary’s Academy website (stmarysacademy.mb.ca).
