Buck Pierce retires

Buck Pierce is hanging ‘em up.

The former Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback called it a CFL career this morning, informing the B.C. Lions of his intention to retire. The 32-year-old played for the Bombers from 2010 before being traded to the Lions in September last season, and still makes his home in Winnipeg.

“I am very grateful for the support of teammates, fans and management in both B.C. and Winnipeg during my career,” Pierce said in a statement put out by the Lions this morning. “Having an opportunity to retire as a Lion where I won a championship is a tremendous honour. It’s been a great ride and I’m ready to move into the next phase of my football career.”

Pierce started his nine-year CFL career in 2005, when B.C. signed the New Mexico State product out of school. He was a backup and starter for the Lions through five seasons, winning a Grey Cup with the Leos in 2006.

A free agent after the 2009 season, Pierce signed with the Bombers and was quickly inserted as the club’s starting quarterback. Unfortunately, despite being a huge favourite among fans, his Bomber career was riddled with various injuries – including a serious elbow injury to his throwing arm in 2010. The highlight of his Bomber time was when he played 16 games and guided to the Blue and Gold to a Grey Cup appearance in 2011.

All told, Pierce finishes his CFL career with a passing completion of 64.2 per cent (1,200-of-1,869), 15,289 passing yards and 76 touchdowns (63 interceptions) in 130 games.
