Manitoba’s Stoughton defeats Nova Scotia

KAMLOOPS -- Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton got back into the win column here at the Tim Hortons Brier Tuesday afternoon, snapping a two-game losing streak with a hard-fought 8-6 triumph over Nova Scotia.

KAMLOOPS — Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton got back into the win column here at the Tim Hortons Brier Tuesday afternoon, snapping a two-game losing streak with a hard-fought 8-6 triumph over Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia skip Jamie Murphy needed a draw to the four-foot with the last rock of the 10th end to send the game to an extra end, but Murphy came up short of the house, handing Manitoba a steal and the win.

The loss dropped Nova Scotia to 0-6, while Manitoba improved to 5-2 and is now done for the day. Manitoba plays Northern Ontario (2-5) and Saskatchewan (4-1) on Wednesday.

Manitoba’s victory over the hapless Nova Scotia foursome was surprising only in that it was as close as it was. But then again, not much has been coming easy for Manitoba’s Stoughton as of late, who lost to Quebec earlier on Tuesday and to Alberta Monday night.

“Both (third) Jon (Mead) and I need to make better shots and finish some ends off a little more,” Stoughton said after the Nova Scotia win. “It’s just one of those things — we’ve got to clean up the little mistakes here and there.”

Stoughton improved his overall shooting percentage the last two games, shooting 89 in the loss to Quebec and a sizzling 95 in the win over Nova Scotia. But he is still just seventh at his position, with an average of 83 percent.

B.C.’s John Morris, meanwhile, continues to be the hottest team in the field, improving to 6-1 Tuesday afternoon with a 9-3 thrashing of Northern Ontario. The game was B.C.’s second win of the day and fifth in a row.

B.C. is alone in first place heading into Tuesday evening’s draw, followed by Alberta’s Kevin Koe at 5-1 and Manitoba at 5-2. Saskatchewan’s Steven Laycock is also very much in the mix with a 4-1 record and holding two games in hand on B.C. and Manitoba.
