A $1.4 billion general civil contract has been awarded to a limited partnership between Bechtel Canada Co., Barnard Construction of Canada Ltd. and EllisDon Civil Ltd. for construction of the proposed 695-megawatt Keeyask generating station.
Manitoba Hydro made the announcement today on behalf of the Keeyask Hydropower Limited Partnership, a venture between Manitoba Hydro and the four Keeyask Cree Nations: Tataskweyak Cree Nation, War Lake First Nation, Fox Lake Cree Nation and York Factory First Nation.
Manitoba Hydro, which will manage construction of the project, wants to begin construction of the dam this summer subject to regulatory and environmental approval. Hydro wants to get the dam up and running by 2019 to take advantage of power sales to the United States.
Keeyask is part of the current Needs For and Alternatives To (NFAT) review by the Public Utilities Board. The Clean Environment Commission is expected to file its report with the provincial government in the next month.
Work covered under the general civil contract includes rock excavation, concrete for the powerhouse and spillway, earthen structures, electrical and mechanical work, and the construction and removal of temporary cofferdams needed to manage the river flow during construction.
Hydro says construction of Keeyask is expected to generate approximately 4,000 person-years of employment over a seven-year period. Read more on the project.
A January 2013 estimate said the construction of Keeyask would cost $6.2 billion, however Hydro is expected to revise that cost upwards at the NFAT hearing.
