A suspected serial apartment break-and-enter artist nabbed after a minor scuffle inside an Elmwood complex will have to raise some cash in order to get out on bail.
Prosecutors have agreed Ros Melnyk, 20, can be released from custody provided he can meet a $10,000 surety requirement and abide by other conditions on his freedom.
Melnyk was arrested last week and now faces charges that he committed 35 apartment B&E’s over the span of about a year between March 2013 and this February.
Police have indicated the break-ins were somewhat sophisticated and involved lock-picks and a listening device suitable for cracking safes and vaults. They occurred mainly in the Transcona and North Kildonan areas. Sometimes, the same building was hit several times.
The owner of a Poplar Avenue apartment block and his son spotted a stranger inside their block a week ago and questioned him about what he was doing there.
They told the Free Press his story made no sense and that he tried to leave when they called police to have him explain to them who he was.
They held the man until police arrived. Police identified Melnyk as the suspect last Friday. He has no criminal record.
If Melnyk meets his surety, he’ll be bound by a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew, and can only be away from his home in the company of his parents. He is also forbidden from possessing weapons.
