The provincial government is funding 10 new RCMP positions across Manitoba, Justice Minister Andrew Swan announced today.
Placements of the new officers will be determined by the RCMP. Kevin Brosseau, commanding officer at RCMP Division “D,” says the new officers will most likely be utilized as front-line personnel.
“What we’ll determine is where those officers will go based on the priorities of this province,” Brosseau said. “Likely (these new positions) will be front line, boots on the ground officers.”
Brosseau also indicated that the RCMP will also explore the use of the extra manpower in its analytical and investigative departments.
A decision on the deployment of the 10 new positions is expected in the coming months.
According to the province, Manitoba’s investment in RCMP enforcement now stands at more than $126 million (798 positions).
Since 2010, Manitoba has increased its investment in the RCMP by more than $26 million, adding 40 new officers and administration positions throughout the province.
