The Canadian Football League may be on the verge of a real labour war, but it hasn’t stopped its nine teams — including the Winnipeg Blue Bombers — from proceeding with business as usual.
The Bombers announced Saturday the signings of three players, including two of their 2014 CFL Draft class.
Coming aboard are:
— Offensive/defensive lineman Quinn Everett (6-3, 305, Mount Allison): drafted in the sixth round, Everett played in 24 games for the Mounties, recording 49 total tackles, 11/2 sacks, 71/2 tackles for losses and one forced fumble. He was switched from defensive to offensive line at a pre-draft regional combine and the Bombers like his potential versatility to be able to play on both sides of the trenches.
— Linebacker Aram Eisho (6-1, 210, McMaster): Eisho was selected in the seventh round after finishing 2013 with 63 total tackles and one interception. In 2012 he was named the OUA Defensive Player of the Year and in leading the Marauders to the 2011 Vanier Cup, while being named the game’s top defensive player and awarded the Bruce Coulter Award after recording 11.5 tackles and forcing one fumble.
— Import defensive back Kamaal McIlwain (5-10, 175, Newberry): McIlwain signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and has had stints with the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers and Kansas City Chiefs last season. At Newberry, he was a two-time all-South Atlantic Conference selection, earning first-team honours his sophomore season and second-team his junior year.
The Bombers are scheduled to open three days of rookie camp on Wednesday, but the CFL’s current collective bargaining agreement also expires at midnight on Thursday — two days before veterans and rookies are to be on the field for the opening of main camp.
