Sequel written for My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but not in development: Vardalos

Winnipeg-born actress Nia Vardalos has written a sequel to her monster hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding but she says stories that the movie is currently in development are jumping the gun.

“We’re not in development, the script was written long ago,” Vardalos writes in an email. “But I’m always tweaking it, ha!”

That said, Vardalos definitely intends to make the sequel to the 2002 comedy, which grossed close to a quarter of a billion dollars on a $5 million budget.

“The immediate goal is to keep the entire creative team intact,” she says.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was set in the city of Chicago but filmed in Toronto. “We don’t know when and where we’ll be filming (the sequel),” she says.

“I think I may be going forward on my Paramount film first,” she adds, referring to Leftovers, another ensemble comedy she wrote in which she will star. It is described as an “anti-romantic comedy.”

Vardalos’s immediate plans include starring in the Theatre 20 production of the Stephen Sondheim musical Company in Toronto. She will play Jenny, a straitlaced married woman who tries pot for the first time. The show runs from June 21 to July 13.
