Dan Vandal won the easiest political battle of his life when he secured the Liberal nomination for the federal riding formerly known as Saint-Boniface.
The city councillor for St. Boniface was acclaimed Tuesday night as the Liberal nominee for Saint Boniface-Saint Vital, the new name for the federal riding that covers southeast Winnipeg.
The meeting took place at the Norwood Hotel, with approximately 175 people in attendance.
“There was no way I could lose, last night,” Vandal joked Wednesday morning. “I was the only person on the ballot, the only person who did the paperwork.”
Vandal, a former Canadian professional middleweight boxing champion, was first elected to council in 1995.
Vandal sat on city council from 1995 to 2004, when he resigned to run for mayor, and again from 2006 until the present. He intends to serve the remainder of his current term on council, which wraps up when the next municipal election is held on Oct. 22.
“There are still a lot of things to do at city hall, a lot of loose ends to tie up,” he said.
Vandal said he will not run for council again this October and will begin campaigning for a federal election expected to take place in 2015.
Vandal was a former provincial New Democrat and joined the federal Liberals about a year ago.
Vandal co-chaired Justin Trudeau’s party leadership campaign in St. Boniface.
As the Liberal candidate, he will be taking on MP Shelly Glover, who serves as both the regional minister for Manitoba and the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
Glover has represented Saint-Boniface since 2008, when she defeated Liberal incumbent Ray Simard by more than 4,000 votes. She doubled her margin of victory over Simard to more than 8,000 votes in the 2011 election.
Both Vandal and Glover are fully bilingual Métis francophones who work for the City of Winnipeg. Glover is on leave from the Winnipeg Police Service.
