Displaced residents of Golden West Centennial Lodge may have to wait another month before they can return to their homes.
The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said today the St. James lodge will remain closed for up to an additional 30 days while work crews repair the damage caused when a water pipe burst on May 19 and flooded the basement area.
The water knocked out power and other building systems, making it an unsafe environment for the lodge’s 116 residents. So they were evacuated to nearby personal care homes, including West Park Manor, Oakview Place and Deer Lodge Centre.
“Residents currently accommodated in communal settings will be prioritized for placement in other Personal Care Homes with vacancies,” the WRHA said in a written statement. “Work is underway to ensure all evacuated residents continue to receive the care they require while restoration work continues at Golden West Centennial Lodge.”
Further details will be announced at a news conference scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today at the Deer Lodge Centre on Portage Avenue.
