WINNIPEG — Even-par 71 was good enough today for Tim Madigan’s first PGA Tour Canada victory, a one-shot triumph at the Players Cup at Pine Ridge.
The 25-year-old tour rookie from Las Cruces, N.M., handled a 75-foot two-putt on the final green to finish at nine-under-par 275, one better than Canadian Matt Hill and American Ricky McDonald. He started the day with a one-shot lead over Fargo’s Josh Persons, who was unable to mount a charge and shot 72.
Madigan rolled his long try at the 18th to within three feet and then calmly rolled in the par putt to win the $27,000 first prize and jump into second place on the tour’s money list at $53,460, behind only leader Joel Dahmen, who finished tied for 24th this week.
That’s an important spot for Madigan, since the top three players on the tour after next week’s event in Thunder Bay will be invited to the RBC Canadian Open in Montreal in two weeks.
Hill posted the number today, shooting four-under 67 and eight-under par. He was out five groups ahead of Madigan in the last twosome.
McDonald, who had a hole-in-one on Saturday, shot 69 today but had started the day three shots behind.
