BRANDON — A cat recently spotted with a bird feeder on its head is still on the loose in Brandon due to complications with the attempts to capture it.
A local resident has been actively disrupting the efforts of the Brandon and Area Lost Animals to capture the cat nicknamed Butterscotch. He has scared volunteers and damaged some BALA cat traps.
“We feel that it has become a game for him, but we don’t understand why,” BALA volunteer Toni Gramiak said. “This suspicious man has made it difficult to successfully capture Butterscotch.”
BALA has been trying to catch the adult orange-and-white tabby since Wednesday morning with the help of Brandon Animal Control. A resident spotted Butterscotch with his head in a bird feeder and reported it to BALA.
It now appears some of the bird feeder has fallen off, allowing Butterscotch to eat and drink.
“We believe it is a free-roaming cat with no home, but we have not been able to check for identification yet,” volunteer Toni Gramiak said. “Clearly it has nowhere to go right now or it would have returned home to get the contraption off.”
Any progress made towards capturing Butterscotch without issue has been thwarted by the unknown individual, Gramiak said.
“We believe he is probably monitoring the Internet as one way of knowing where our traps are,” Gramiak said. “Anyone who sees the cat should not give away the location to anyone except us.”
Police have been notified about any illegal activity including trespassing on private property, but once they arrive, the man has returned to his own home.
BALA is now concerned both for the safety of Butterscotch, which continues to have part of the bird feeder around its head, and the volunteers working to capture the cat.
The volunteers are asking anyone who sees Butterscotch, or believes they have seen the man disrupting their efforts, to contact them at 204-724-7033.
If the man seems to be a safety concern they should contact Brandon Police Services directly.
People have been warned not to try to capture Butterscotch because the cat spooks easily.
In order for BALA to successfully capture the cat and remove the bird feeder, Butterscotch needs to be calm and hungry.
“Our focus right now is to safely catch Butterscotch and that will be easier if it is calm,” Gramiak said. “But at the same time, we are very worried about this individual.”
