The top five mayoral candidates will debate the future of downtown Winnipeg Wednesday night, the third major forum of the campaign so far.
Topics will include the fate of heritage buildings, safety, tax increment financing, homelessness and rapid transit.
The debate, organized by the Downtown BIZ, will be hosted by CJOB 68’s Richard Cloutier and Shannon Sampert, the Winnipeg Free Press’s perspectives and politics editor.
The event sparked discontent because only the top five candidates have been formally invited. Those five are Brian Bowman, Gord Steeves, Judy Wasylycia-Leis, Paula Havixbeck and Robert-Falcon Ouellette.
Late last month, other candidates, including David Sanders and Michel Fillion, expressed outrage at having been excluded.
The BIZ said the other five candidates will be allowed to submit written answers to questions, and that they will be given a spot on the stage and invited to speak at the discretion of the moderators.
The event starts at 5 p.m. in the atrium of the Manitoba Hydro building on Portage Avenue.
The event will be live-streamed at winnipegfreepress.com.
