Progressive Conservative MLA Leanne Rowat will not seek reelection.

The Riding Mountain MLA posted the news on her Facebook profile this afternoon. https://www.facebook.com/leanne.rowat?fref=browse_search

“It has been a great pleasure to serve my constituents of Riding Mountain and the people of Manitoba, but after 13 years it is time to take on new challenges outside of public office,” Rowat said.

Rowat was first elected in 2003 in the then constituency of Minnedosa and re-elected there in 2007. When the boundaries were redrawn in 2011 she was elected in the newly-formed constituency of Riding Mountain.

In the posting, Rowat said she successfully passed three pieces of legislation, Bill 202, the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Act, Bill 214, the Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month Act, and Bill 226, the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day Act.

She also said she was successful in getting the government to agree to create a Grandparents Rights Advocate Office in Manitoba and also advocated for Manitoba families with children with autism.

Rowat is the second PC MLA to say they will not seek reelection when Manitobans head to the polls, likely in April 2016.

Agassiz MLA Stu Briese said in June he would not put his name on the ballot in the next election.
