There’s a chance Drew Willy could be ready to start against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats after all.

Just two days after head coach Mike O’Shea said the team was proceeding as if back-up quarterback Brian Brohm would take the reins in Saturday’s game, Willy was back in the saddle in today’s practice, taking first-team reps. True, the Bombers said they’d wait as long as possible to rule out their starting pivot, who went down with a right shoulder sprain during their last game.

The Bombers did not make Willy available to media otoday, and O’Shea was cautious. “He threw pretty well,” the coach said. “It depends on how sore he wakes up, and whether he can repeat the performance, that’s really what it comes down to.”

That would seem to leave Brohm in a little bit of limbo, though he’s still getting more reps than usual and O’Shea said they weren’t worried about making sure he was up to speed. “Brian’s been prepared all season,” O’Shea said. “It’s not like he’s going to prepare differently now with the possibility of him starting. He’s going to continue to be a professional, he’s going to take a few more reps in practice.”

One formerly wounded soldier that is likely to make a return is DB Johnny Sears, who has been sitting out for over two months. Initially, it was a lower-body injury that knocked him out, though he said he’s been healthy for over a month. This morning he was taking main reps as halfback. “It’s been a long time coming,’ Sears said. “Finally, I get my chance. I have to make the most of it and do what I’m supposed to do.”
