If there’s any good news for the Winnipeg Jets after a 1-2 start on the NHL’s opening weekend, it’s that they ought to be ready for what’s to come.
That’s because they played two of the league’s elite clubs — the San Jose Sharks and L.A. Kings — and didn’t go without their opportunities in a pair of defeats.
It’s been a big rise in the level of game since training camp opened, especially in that the Jets went into the deep end pretty much right off the bat.
They start the home part of their schedule Friday night at the MTS Centre against the Nashville Predators.
“That’s the big run, right — San Jose, you go back to last year to their start, there wasn’t anybody that could come near them,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said this morning about the level of games the team has faced in the first three. “They were just blowing the doors off everybody.
“And L.A., they had another big night last night (a 6-1 win over Edmonton). And they’re on their game and they had a real strong pre-season as well. I don’t think that’s bad. In some ways it’s a continuation of your training camp. You want to get into the grind. We got into it. Phoenix grind hard. They’re a big, big team. We had three real physical games and you could see it in how the bodies came back to the rink the next day.
“But we got back into that grind the next day and we want to use that, the fact that we just played three really hard games to prepare us. Now we feel as healthy as we should be after those three games and we’re ready for that kind of grind, and I think Nashville’s going to bring that as well.”
Today, the Jets sent centre Patrice Cormier back to the AHL’s St. John’s IceCaps.
Cormier, 24, played in two NHL pre-season games and suffered an eye injury in the second one. He had been on the injured list since then, but was cleared to play this week. He was placed on waivers Tuesday, cleared today, and was assigned to the IceCaps.
Cormier played nine games for the Jets last season, recording three assists.
He has 49 NHL games in his career.
