Winnipeg Blue Bombers QB Brian Brohm will get his first CFL start — and just the third start of his seven-year pro career — against the Calgary Stampeders tonight at Investors Group Field. Here’s a thumbnail:
WHO IS BRIAN BROHM? Born to a family of quarterbacks (his brother Jeff was an NFLer), Brohm was a high school phenom. He made the cover of Sports Illustrated in 2002 while still just a junior in high school and went on the following year to be named the USA Today Offensive Player of the year and the Gatorade Player of the Year.
From high school, Brohm went on to a standout career at the University of Louisville that included MVP honours in the 2007 Orange Bowl.
A second-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2008, his three-year NFL career featured just two starts. He went on to play two seasons in the United Football League for the Las Vegas Locomotives and spent last season on the injured list of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He was acquired by the Bombers last March in a trade that sends a conditional draft pick in 2015 to Hamilton.
QUIRKY FACT: The UFL folded twice while Brohm was in the league and he had to sue the Locomotives ownership for unpaid wages as part of a class-action suit. Brohm says he only recently got his last game cheque.
QUOTE: “He just has a moxie, a certain amount of poise about him. That’s it, that’s all you really need. At the end of the day you just want him to go out there, be himself and play ball.”
— Bombers OL Chris Greaves on Brohm
