Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 23/10/2014 (3987 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
The mood was noticeably lighter around the Winnipeg Jets today at the MTS Centre.
That comes after breaking a four-game losing streak Tuesday night at home and a scheduled day off on Wednesday.
But even better than the mood might be some good news on the injury front, where head coach Paul Maurice reported today that left-winger Evander Kane is progressing ahead of schedule after going out of the season opener on Oct. 7 with a knee injury.
“It’s two weeks,” Maurice said. “Evander Kane is progressing quite well to the point where we have an expectation that in the next few days, he’ll be back on IR skates. It’s what we call them, non-main-group skates so nobody runs into a guy.
“But he’ll be back on the ice, we think, sometime this weekend and after that, it’s as much about strength and healing time and things like that so that’s kind of positive news about him.”
Maurice gave no specific timetable on Kane’s return to the lineup but it’s now looking quite likely that will be sometime in November with an outside shot at later next week. Right after Kane’s injury in the game in Arizona, nobody in the Jets organization could even say that for sure.
The Jets are 2-4 as they head for Friday’s home game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Today’s hour-long practice showed a team with some weight removed from collective shoulders.
“It’s the lighter mood after a win and you’d like to enjoy that,” Maurice said. “But that’s something that we’re actually specifically working on. It’s having the communication and connection on the ice.
“Every year it’s a new team. I know a lot of these guys have played (together) but you have new people and new expectations so you have to re-establish those bonds. We should be able to find some joy in the work if you’re working as hard as you can, if you’re competing and focused on events. Every practice and every game can’t be splitting nails. You’ve got to be able to enjoy it and work really hard.
“So you’re not going out there saying, ‘Let’s have fun today.’ Let’s enjoy the working really hard in these three areas and make sure there’s a lot of talk on the ice. Let’s try to fight our way through being a quiet team.”
