Winnipeg’s McEwen has strong start at Grand Slam of Curling event

SELKIRK — Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen today continued his extraordinary run to start the curling season, winning his opening game of the Grand Slam of Curling event in six ends by a 10-3 count over Scotland’s David Murdoch.

McEwen has won the first four events he’s played so far this season, and including today’s excellent start at the Selkirk Recreation Complex, he’s 29-1 for the season.

Also on this afternoon’s draw, Kevin Koe of Edmonton defeated Jim Cotter of Kelowna 12-5, snagging six in the seventh end.

In the women’s late-afternoon draw, Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald fell 10-2 to Margaretha Sifgridsson of Sweden, Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland defeated Sherry Middaugh of Ontario 6-5 and Biana Feltscher of Switzerland edged out Scotland’s Eve Muirhead 7-6.

McEwen shot 97 per cent this afternoon, and his team 93 per cent, continuing their winning way.

He opened with a routine deuce against Murdoch, then stole three in the second when Murdoch came up light facing four McEwen counters.

The 15 men’s and 15 women’s teams compete in Selkirk until the event finals on Sunday.
