ST. PAUL, Minn. — Marco Scandella’s point shot at 1:01 of overtime lifted the Minnesota Wild to a 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at the Xcel Energy Center on Sunday.
The goal helped the Wild avert a near catastrophic collapse, having blown a 3-0 third-period lead.
The Jets surely stole a point from this game.
The result gave the Jets a 2-2-1 road trip and a record of 6-2-3 in their stretch of nine of 11 games away from home. It wound up Sunday and now the team returns to the MTS Centre for three games, starting Tuesday against the New Jersey Devils.
A horrible start against the Wild appeared to doom the Winnipeg Jets when they fell behind 3-0 in the first period. Zach Parise scored twice and Nino Niederreiter had a single to stake the Wild to a big lead.
The game was full of power plays and chippiness until the Jets sprang to life with a push in the third period. It started with a quick play by Michael Frolik, fooling Wild defenceman Nate Prosser and goalie Niklas Backstrom to score from close range. Then Evander Kane banked one in from the corner, off Backstrom’s right skate. That was followed about two minutes later by Andrew Ladd’s deflection and suddenly, the Jets had tied the game 3-3 after appearing to be out of it.
