A sigh of relief was in order this afternoon for the Winnipeg Jets.

Defenceman Dustin Byfuglien, who was unable to play the final two-plus minutes of Friday’s 2-1 home-ice victory over the Boston Bruins, was back on the ice at the MTS Iceplex for today’s team practice.

The Jets are already battling an injury epidemic on their back end, with the top four blueliners on the depth chart in sick bay long-term.

Byfuglien was clipped by a high stick in the face late in Friday’s game and could barely make it to the bench.

“In the chops,” coach Paul Maurice said today about the high stick that felled Byfuglien temporarily.

The good news is that Byfuglien and the rest of the patched-up defensive corps will be ready to go for Sunday night’s completion of a four-game homestand against the Philadelphia Flyers (8 p.m., TSN3, TSN1290).

The Jets are 7-1-3 in their last 11 starts and at 17-10-6 and 40 points, hold one of the Western Conference playoff spots today.

During his interview today, Maurice was asked — in an attempt to lighten the mood — about forwards possibly chipping in to play defence.

The coach took the ball and ran with the humour.

“We did the list and I had two guys skate by me the other day and declare that they absolutely could NOT play defence,” Maurice grinned. “And we were thinking about taking our forwards out and seeing who the best backward-skaters were just to make a chart of that (so we could say) ‘You’re in first.’ But no, I think we have a bigger lineup of guys who are just declaring themselves as forwards, that are absolutely not going back.”

He also said today that he’s had no updates on any of the injured defencemen, Toby Enstrom, Zach Bogosian, Jacob Trouba or Mark Stuart. The team has said Enstrom and Bogosian are out until January and that Trouba and Stuart are done until February.

“(Nothing) other than things are OK,” Maurice said. “Things are going the way they’re supposed to as of right now. They’re not getting checked every day, X-rayed every day, all those tests.

“They kind of have their milestones and we’re not at the second milestone with any of them. Everything’s going as planned.”
