Team Jones claims seventh provincial curling title

WINKLER, Man. – Jennifer Jones kept her calm through a tight Manitoba Scotties final, finally eking out a 5-2 win against Kerri Einarson to claim her seventh provincial women’s curling title. In front of a jam-packed crowd at the Winkler arena, the reigning Olympic champions from St. Vital patiently worked through a slew of blank ends punctuated by singles. Jones led just 2-1 after the fifth end, and Einarson tied it up in the sixth. But in the eighth end, Jones managed to break free, working over a logjam around the button to score a deuce and go up 4-2. That put Einarson in a rough spot, down by two against Jones in the ninth. The deal was sealed when her ninth-end hammer shot didn’t roll deep enough, handing Jones a steal of one. The golden foursome of Jones, lead Dawn McEwen, second Jill Officer and third Kaitlyn Lawes then ran Einarson out of rocks in the tenth, to formally clinch their latest championship. The crowd issued up a thunderous round of applause after Einarson threw her final rock. This is the second year in a row Einarson, lead Kristin MacCuish, second Liz Fyfe and third Selena Kaatz have made the final. Last year, they fell in the last game to Chelsea Carey, who since disbanded her team and moved to Alberta. On that note, while the Manitoba final was underway, Carey was locked in battle with reigning Alberta champion Val Sweeting in the Alberta final. Ultimately, Sweeting defended her title 9-7.
