Chief blown away by video of plan for downtown

Jobs and Economy Minister Kevin Chief said today he was blown away by a video showing a plan by True North Sports & Entertainment that would transform downtown.

“I thought it was really cool,” he said.

Chief, also the minister for the City of Winnipeg, also said he was unsure why the proposed project has become such a controversy at city hall.

“For me it’s pretty clear,” he told reporters later Wednesday. “I saw a transformative video, a conceptual video. I was pretty excited to see it.”

Chief also said it was evident what area and streets of the downtown the video depicted.

“You could tell the streets that were involved with the project,” he said, adding he was “blown away” by its scope and how it would fit in with other efforts to bring more people to the downtown.

“I think I was more sort of taken aback by the potential and the magnitude,” he said.

Chief said he could not comment on the future of the project, or his potential role in bringing all sides back together.

“That’s not something anyone has asked me to do,” he said, adding he will continue to work with Mayor Brian Bowman and TNSE’s Mark Chipman on other projects.

“I do think it’s important that they continue to work together and work out the details of the project,” he said.
